When K.W. came to Crosslines, she was a single mother caring for an infant while working to rebuild her life. After overcoming homelessness, addiction and significant personal challenges, she had committed herself to creating a different future for herself and her daughter. Determined to continue moving forward, K.W. enrolled in a rigorous high school completion program through MERS Goodwill. While balancing the demands of parenting, she successfully earned her diploma and was accepted into CoxHealth’s Phlebotomy Program.
After a serious injury and ongoing legal challenges disrupted their lives, a young couple came to Crosslines seeking food assistance. Through case management, they set goals and began addressing the many challenges they faced, including food insecurity, employment concerns, disability applications and mental health needs. Crosslines helped connect the couple with community resources, including SNAP benefits, utility assistance and other support services.
At 79 years old, Great-Grandma B. is raising two great-grandchildren, one in elementary school and one in high school. Like many kinship caregivers, she has faced the challenges of meeting the needs of growing children while living on a limited income. Over the years, she has turned to Crosslines for support through programs such as Wish I May, Holiday Assistance, Coats for Kids and resource referrals. Whether she needed help finding services, winter clothing or assistance celebrating special occasions, she knew where to turn for guidance and encouragement.
When a young family first came to Crosslines during the COVID-19 pandemic, they were facing housing instability, financial hardship, and the stress of caring for multiple family members with disabilities. After a dispute with a landlord left them struggling to catch up on rent, Crosslines helped connect them with grant funding that allowed them to settle their housing situation and move into a safer home.
When a mother came to Crosslines Food Pantry for the first time, she expected to leave with groceries. What she didn’t expect was to also find diapers for her baby, coats for her children, and even a birthday bag for her daughter, whose birthday was that very day. She left not only with food, but with tears of gratitude — a reminder that dignity and hope are just as essential as bread and milk.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Ombudsman?
Ombudsman is a Swedish term meaning “one who speaks on behalf of another.” We are federally-mandated advocates who work on behalf of residents in long-term care facilities. We are not employed by long-term care facilities or the state—we work solely for residents.
What counties do you serve for Ombudsman services?
We serve 21 counties across Southwest Missouri, from Humansville and Urbana in the north to Gainesville and Alton near the Arkansas border, and west to Joplin including McDonald, Newton, Barton, and Jasper counties.
What kind of problems can an Ombudsman help with?
We help with lost clothing or dentures, medication errors, dietary concerns, problems with guardians or family, discharge appeals, abuse or neglect concerns, and violations of residents’ rights. If you’re having any issue in your facility, we’re here to help.
Are Ombudsman services really free?
Yes. All advocacy services are completely free and confidential.
I'm looking for a long-term care facility for a family member. Can you help?
While we can’t recommend one facility over another, we can provide you with a list of facilities in your area. We recommend making unannounced visits, asking for a full tour, and speaking with residents and family members during your visit.
How do I qualify for the senior food box?
The CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program) senior food box requires tighter income guidelines than our regular pantry services. You must be 60 or older and living well below the poverty line (typically making around $1,100-$1,200 per month or less). You can pick up this box monthly while also visiting the pantry.
What if I can't leave my home to get food?
Our homebound shopping and delivery program brings food directly to your door each month. The groceries are customized for seniors with softer foods, healthier options, and items that are easier to prepare. Call us to see if you qualify.
Can I get food from the pantry even if I'm above the income limits?
We never turn anyone away empty-handed. Even if you don’t meet our standard eligibility requirements, we will provide you with an emergency supply of food. If you’re in crisis, please come talk to us.
Where are you located?
Our East Division facility is located at [ADDRESS]. Park in front of the building when you visit. For Ombudsman services, you can call us and we’ll come to you—families and residents don’t need to travel to our office.
Do I need to make an appointment?
For food pantry services, walk-ins are welcome during our hours. For homebound delivery, you’ll need to call to get enrolled in the program. For Ombudsman assistance, you can call anytime and we’ll arrange to visit you at your facility.
